How do I care for my new Tie Dye from Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters?

How do you make your Tie Dye clothing?

Todd and I tie dye our clothing by hand at our home-based studio, but we start with blanks that are all cotton or hemp — aiming to pick styles you will enjoy! Soon we will be posting videos on our socials of how we make our tie Dye.

Where do you get your blank clothing?

We buy most of our blanks from a California based company called Dharma Trading Co. https://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/fabric-from-dharma-trading-co.html , who sources from ethical companies around the world, while also making a lot of their own white clothing blanks in U.S. by their own Dharma workers. Dharma Trading does a great job making and sourcing sturdy, resilient and long lasting clothing so that your new clothes will wash and wear for years. When we order clothing blanks from Dharma, we try to buy as much of our blanks from U.S., as we find it very sturdy and also so we can pass on our savings to you. Some of our clothing can only be found in Southeast Asia, where they have a long history of making clothing that is sturdy, elegant and perfect for tie dying!

How should I care for my new Tie Dye clothing?

ALL our TIE DYES - All of our clothing is washed and dried multiple times during the dying process, so it should not shrink after you buy it — but we suggest to you to use COLD Water to wash your new clothes, with similar colors, and dry on LOW, or even hang dry, if you prefer. You may iron your clothes, but use a low heat setting, if you wish, but you do not have to, as our clothes can be thrown on casually and should look good after a a quick wash and low dry in your dryer.

GRAPHICS on your clothing - If your clothing as has any graphics (decals on front or back), you need to be careful to keep the dryer on LOW every time you wash, or even HANG DRY for longer lasting graphics. We make our own art and designs in our home art studio for your clothing, and send them to Ninja Transfers for decal creation. We find Ninja’s decals to be long lasting, and trust their Brand. Below you can find more information from Ninja on how to care for your new Graphics printed tie dye.

When it comes to washing Graphics printed shirts, gentleness is key. Harsh detergents, warm water, and aggressive washing can all cause cracking, fading, and premature deterioration of graphics. To CLEAN Graphics clothing safely:

  1. Pre-treat any stains by gently dabbing with a stain remover or natural solution like diluted vinegar. Never aggressively scrub printed areas.

  2. Use a mild, gentle detergent without added bleach or fabric softener. Look for cleaners specially formulated for delicates or sensitive skin.

  3. Turn shirts inside out to protect the design from pilling and friction. Turning them inside out prevents damage from contact with other items.

  4. Wash in cold water on a gentle or delicate cycle. Warm water can cause fading, and hot water damages prints. Cold water is ideal.

IRON? Sure. To finish off freshly washed tees, you'll need to smooth out any wrinkles. Carefully ironing or steaming can restore a wrinkle-free look without damaging designs:

    • Ironing: Turn the tee inside out and use the coolest appropriate setting for the fabric. Place a cloth between the iron and design. Iron until wrinkles release.

    • Steaming: Hang the tee inside out and use the lowest temperature setting. Avoid directly steaming printed areas--work around them instead.
